Build an Author Platform and They Will Come OR How a "Field of Dreams" strategy MAY NOT WORK WELL

Let's examine a few issues here about Character vice Author branding shall we?

1. Usual YAF novel or romance classic has between 40 and 80 thousand words, many related to main character right?

2. Author's Bio has maybe 200 words and Bibliography another 100 or so.

SO why in the world would a well meaning Ebook Parent(Author) spend months and Years giving birth to their EbookChild AND NOT do everything that is possible to magnify and illuminate that character.

Beware the purveyors of the Author Branditis syndrome.

Trust Your Instincts and let the character have center stage. Here are a few ideas to get started on this aspect.

Oh and btw we will coach and advise Socially Responsible Authors and Self Publishers on how this works out and extends.

A. Let's start at the beginning. Most writers have a story concept or dream, and in many cases, find a main character and others to present the story and effect dialogue. Most fictional treatments which are highly readable share strong character development, and this narrative makes it worth a good long read. 

Now, the new idea is that an author, who pours themselves into this character, and to an extent, becomes that character, deserves to bring that character forward in the marketing.

So, with that we suggest the following:

Set up a charactername@gmail.com account. This will be needed for the Google+ Hangouts where fans can 'meet' the character and author.Set up a google hangout schedule of 'appearances' for that character. We recommend 2x a month on a alternating schedule.

Set up a Facebook fan page for the character.Set up a Youtube account(using gmail from above) for readings and trailers for book.

As You can see, we highly suggest the use of social media technologies and scrap the notion of an author page or platform, since the only place the author's name appears is in very front of book and in bio. 

By allowing the character's name and personality to shine among the social networks, a following will evolve and nourish the ebook activity and also open the community for sequels.

Pebbles in the Pond vice BS(Big Splash) Marketing for an EbookChild

Imagine that the online market for ebooks and books is like a small body of water, e.g. pond, and You are standing on the shore waiting to release Your EbookChild into that dark and forboding water. Which technique will make the most 'ripples'? 

 A. Prevailing notions seem to suggest that Big Splash marketing(aka BS) with a full on cross media, branding author platform approach(did I get enough buzzwords in that phrase) is required. Has some merit, yet like when we were kids in summer, too many cannonballing jumps at one time can empty the pool of water. 

 B. Pebbles in the Pond is a technique much like it sounds. In Your hand is a collection of various pebbles and Yes, when cast into the water, makes an interlocking and overlapping pattern. Guerilla vice Gorilla Ebook Channel Marketing or Time for A Mea Culpa or 2

Biggest illlusion on the Ebook Channel Marketing scene is that "More is More" a la big box data warehouses like Amazon et. al. And, I still, at times, suffer from BS(Big Splash) marketing syndrome. So here is my 'warts and all' admission that not all great big ideas work do they?

We started a channel marketing Mapping project for 'Buy Local' Indie Store ebook placements(http://bit.ly/PlaceYourEbookChild2013) and thought we would get clever by adding a link to our clients'(www.sophiasirius.net) offering through a select series of International Airport Bookstores online from WH Smith.

Well today, when checking on map accuracy, lo and behold, WH Smith changed(and imagine did not tell anyone they were doing  such an onerous thing...wink..wink) the way that Kobo Ebooks are searched for through their system. Lessons learned:

Beware the weight of an online elephant, as there is a good chance that Your EbookChild will get squashed.

Never(never) assume that Your ebook is visible online unless You are willing to check on that weekly.

Stay focused on community based online speciality bookstores, and stay clear of the huge data warehouse approaches.

How to Re Light a Fire For Your EbookChild when the Kindling Dies in the Amazon Jungle

Readers of this blog can most likely figure out I am no fan of the data mining operation that Amazon is running on the good intentions of the Indie Author community. If there were ever a case of 'caveat emptor'(let the buyer be wary) then it is the Free KDP episodes which are intended to seed that broader market with no charge reading material. A few issues with that strategy:

1st According to my long time Asian business associates, there is an expression that is used to save face there. "FREE is more expensive" and have experienced that in many countries. A gift is just that, a gift, present NOT to be construed as an offering that leads to a purchase.

2nd The Power of Word of Mouth marketing is long respected, YET the policies at Kindleville preclude even a simple community based borrowing approach. Gotta wonder.

3rd The absence of niche or focus market ability for the Free Kindle project, means this is an example of Big Splash(BS) technique which makes a large and short term ripple in the marketplace.

If You Can't Fight Em Join In The Fray Eh?

Did We realize that there is a new way to effect gender equity through Ebooks? Seems that the category of 'Contemporary Women' is among fastest growing segments on online Ebook activity, right up there with Romance. So this is a segment from a blog which INVITES authors of progressive ebooks to 'RECATEGORIZE' their titles into the rising segment, and effectively reframe the notion of what is contemporary women. Readers of this space will realize that there is more than one way to skin an ebook no? We have identified a 'bias' in the ebook categorization approach used by nearly all online vendors, which is based on BISAC categories, some of which have been in place for nearly 100 years. See this Link http://bit.ly/BISACCategories2012 to be totally amazed (lots of important social issues are STILL CONSIDERED FICTIONAL).

 To wit: Even though women, as a focus group, purchase nearly 4x the number of trade retail paperbacks(could be reason why book industry pushes for Romance as leading the "Best Sellers" list right?), there are ZERO Top level categories for Women's Issues/Rights/Health. Buried safely under Social Issues, etc. Ahem.. Time for a dose of Digital Satyagraha no?

So instead of trying to move the mountain, we have elected to shift the categories, holding our egalitarian noses all the time, so that our offerings on Sophia's Selection (www.sophiasirius.net) will be placed in a Fiction category called Contemporary Women (which btw, is among the fastest growing categories for Online Ebook sales. 

 So, with that, be advised that the ebook marketing is becoming a 'finger on the pulse' reactionary effort, and that well written works MAY need to be 'categorized' inaccurately to satisfy and placate the Search Engine bots.

Why Posting to Author Pages or Sites Makes Sense but Not Sales

And, once the Ebookchild is ready for the world, the natural tendency is to show off the new brood to friends and family, and even complete strangers. Seems a likely effort.

HOWEVER, there are few places online where showing off the new bookchild actually results in the 'Presents' of sales (Free GiveAways Notwithstanding) and opens the dialogue for other options.

Been pondering how the term "Best Selling" ebook is bandied about and realized that this term refers to a NARROW set of topics or subject matter(when compared to BISAC listings in the 1000's of subjects). We monitor the reports from the key data warehousing ebook entities(Amazon, Kobo, IStore, Smashwords, et.al) through news reports, blog posts, and direct interaction(as in during BEA). Here is my unofficial summary of the key attributes of the top selling(whatever that means) subject or genres for the last 18 to 24 months(and perhaps for the next 12 to 18 months as well).

The 'Escape from Reality' Leading subects for Ebooks are(the digital envelope Please?)...

1. Romance Novels(confirmed by RWAA and Bowker report from 2011 & Direct interaction during BEA with RWAA executive director).

2. Sci Fi Thrillers(as in blood guts and gore). No surprise here since nerd herd revels in this genre.

3. Futuristic Mysteries(see 2 Above)

4. Crime, Fantasy, Humor(sick mostly)

So, do not bemoan that the ebook reading population resembles the Hidden nature of the subject matter, and do YOURself a Major favor.. DO NOT Fall for the build it and they will come protestations of the self appointed online ebook marketing gods and goddesses.

I speak from the leading edge of a learning curve that focuses on bringing 'Hidden Treasures' ebooks DIRECTLY to the inner communities, and the 'Pebbles in the Pond' 2nd and 3rd rings surrounding those extant and readily identifiable communities, through our 'It's a Jungle Out There' Ebook Tours (see this link for updates).

A prequel to the Jungle Tour for Ebook and Book Authors OR Worshipping at the Altar of the SEO Gods

A bit of a notion about how I see our Jungle Tours taking shape with firm tongue in cheek reference(all rightes reserved) to Source of this film trailer.



Do You See Yourself as this character when considering how Your Book or Ebook can be cast into the torrents of the Amazon Jungle of nearly 20 million titles?


Much has been said about the notion among so called Jungle expedition experts (Note: I offer a seat on the Learning Curve Express boat), that once Your ebook or book has entered the teeming masses(estimated at between 10 and 20 million titles) that all one needs to do is get a good search engine terms strategy, and voila, the promised land appears with willing and grateful readers at hand.

Let me disabuse that notion with a bit of what I have Learned in interactions with the SEO Gods and more vitally, the importance of knowing that language with that Searchers' tribe is essential.

A. In 1995 at a BEA in LA, I had the fortunate experience of meeting, informally, with a key designer of the data crunching engine from deep in the Amazon forest, who showed me his etchings which clearly demonstrated that 'understanding' of the algorithms is not the reason why the chiefs of that tribe are in the book business.(Hint: Like all head shrinking methods, this one shrinks data and puts it on market for passing traders). So not many ways to win that search approach is there?

B. Know personally for many moons, two interesting magicians, namely Declan Dunn, who at Internet World 2 in NYC pronounced this missive "It's the communities of communities" which make an interesting WWW campaign. Sage wisdom that transcends the banalities of SEO madness. Second gent is Danny Sullivan, who's credentials in Search Engine tuning is well known, who has explained that Search without context is a vain passion. I advise a careful read of their blogs to help with translating the language of the SEO Gods.

So, how do I propose to fox the chief of SEO? Simple really. Let us venture forth through the native communities online, meet those tribes, and learn the contextual languages that are spoken there. I recommend this as a means of preventing the languishment of Your BookChild in the dark recesses of the teeming jungles of ebooks and book titles.

Been watching for signs from the natives and jungle beasts, and they are clear for those BookChildren which are strong and well written. IF Your Bookchild is NOT one of these Five subjects, the algorithms(those devilish trail makers inside the Jungle) will NOT lead a searcher to Your Ebook or Book. This is based solely on one issue:

"The Jungle Gods determine what Your search reveals and Nothing more!!"

So IF Your bookchild refers to anything other than:

20 June 2013 Does that Fire in the Night Need Kindling OR Is there another path

Seems that the Gods of the Amazon Forest have pulled another devilish trick, and created mini villages called 'Worlds' which look to become private enclaves for BookChildren of authors who will only be permitted to play in these worlds IF they pay for that right. AND that means that many good BookChildren will go hungry outside the locked search gates of those 'Worlds'. We need to expand the maps for other villages and make a guidebook on how good BookChildren's Authors can draw their own maps. Will be ready within a few days.

17 June 2013 The Book Child You Treasure is surrounded by Hostile Jungle Creatures

All the time we are taking to increase the visibility of the Book Children on this adVenture appears to be a lost cause. Seems the Amazon Jungle gods are conspiring to rob the food from the children each time we send someone to help by reading the book at our page. That happens with this sort of trickery:

Seems that the necromancers in the Jungle would deign to kidnap the visitor to a third trail and we discovered that these listings appeared to divert the adVenturer to a part of jungle where our Book Child was no where to be seen. Devilish tricks of the jungle.

We have found out that the well Hidden Treasures books are so well disguised in the Amazon Forest that we may need to equip this party with more supplies. So we are evolving the process to roll each of these book authors into Epub format(used by about 75% of the world's e readers and desktop and Laptop computers) and will post another note about that diversionary path in a few days.

The Wind UP and Here's the Pitch for June 2013

You all have been patient weeding through the matrix of myriad musings(he he alliterative are we?) as this blog takes form in last few months. And now here is the payoff for that patience.

In Search Of 'The Missing Ebooks' OR How to Find Your Communities Of Readers & Friends

OK, sometimes being a contrarian is like being on the end of a branch high in a tree and the storm whips the tree and makes for a wild ride. Yet, after nearly 40 years in publishing, technology marketing(essence of ebook marketing is like shareware), and product management, there is ONE issue that continues on as a relentless Factoid.

If You want to have Your Ebook FOUND spend more time on Searching for the Niche communities and placing an excerpt from the ebook in a current discussion(just like in a Sunday Salon of yesteryear) and then make a condensed FreEbook available as an appeteaser, which carries a link(at the bottom page) to the Ebook(hopefully as a gift) .

Make absolutely sure that about 1/3 into the ebook and FreEbook that an invitation to review and discuss the subject matter is included.

This method has worked on two notable projects. CSFTS, 101 Stories etc(circa 1994) and Vegan Fusion(circa 2008) so is based on actual experience and not some SEO big data warehouse theories.
